Exploring East African Cuisine

As a travel writer with a special section on my blog about Gourmet Travel, I’m exploring world cuisines.

When I was in Michigan a few years ago, my school chum introduced me to East African cuisine. We ate at the Blue Nile in Ferndale, Michigan, the Ethiopian Restaurant.

My friend knew how to eat with her fingers using the injera bread, and I enjoyed learning the techniques and the flavorful and colorful dishes.

Here’s what I learned about East African cuisine

East African cuisine reflects the diverse cultures, landscapes, and histories of countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, and Rwanda.

East African cuisine was shaped by indigenous cooking practices, as well as influences from the Arab, Indian, and European traders and settlers who have traveled through the region over centuries.

East African food is known for its hearty, flavorful dishes that vary by region but share common threads in terms of ingredients, preparation methods, and customs.
